Verity

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Avery asks.

He’s staring down at me, his dark hair falling rakishly over his blinded eye, concern bright in his gray eyes. It suddenly strikes me how much he’s grown up.

Of course, he has.

I’ve just let myself become too distracted by Felix to notice.

I nod.

“Yes, and in no small way, thanks to you. I don’t know what I did to get on Ryuk’s bad side, but he seems determined to make sure I pay the price for it. Whatever it is.”

I do have a guess though.

If I’d known that dragging Natalija away from him that day in the forest would result in him putting a target on my back, I would have left her to deal with him. Knowing Nat, she would have enjoyed flirting with him, and she’s more than capable of handling him.

Still, what kind of friend would I have been to leave her alone with a man like him? Not a good one, that’s for sure.

“Are you looking for something in particular?” Avery asks.

“What?” I blink at him in confusion.

“Books,” he clarifies, with a wave of his hand at the surrounding books. “Anything in particular?”

“Oh,” I laugh nervously. “I was hoping to find a rom-com to distract myself with.”

“Hmm, I may have a few suggestions,” Avery says, as he moves to re-shelve the fallen books. “If you want them, that is. I know how hard it can be to find the right book sometimes.”

Words fail me as I watch him tenderly return each book to its rightful place, and I quickly move to help him.

Avery reads romances?

My eyes roam over the dark neck tattoo that wraps all the way around his throat and up to his ears. He certainly doesn’t seem like the type.

He suddenly turns to meet my gaze, his face serious as he waits for my answer.

I’ve known Avery for pretty much my whole life, but as I stare back at him, I get the feeling that I don’t actually know anything about him.

Again, I’ve always been too distracted by Felix … After the last couple days, I’m really starting to regret that.

“You … you’re a fan of romances?” I finally ask, unable to resist my curiosity.

Avery rewards me a half-grin.

“Fan is probably too strong a word. But from time to time, yes, I enjoy reading romances.”

“Color me surprised,” I murmur, and Avery’s eyes dance with silent laughter as he watches me.

While he’s equally as gorgeous as Felix, there’s a quieter beauty to Avery’s looks. I’d always seen him as just the awkward, younger twin who was unfortunate enough to have been born second.

Mere minutes from being Alpha heir and, perhaps, my fated mate.

Maybe I’ve had him all wrong. Sure, he’s the broodier of the two, but there’s an awareness to him that has my curiosity piquing.

And I’m even more surprised that I want to hear his recommendations, if not simply to learn more about him from what he likes to read.

“Growing up, Felix always made it clear that I wasn’t welcome when the two of you went off to play.
